Why is Pet Grooming Important?

Whether you have a cat or a dog, grooming is an important part of maintaining your pet’s physical appearance and overall wellbeing for a number of reasons.

While they groom themselves, they can’t always get to those hard to reach places.

Pets with hairy faces tend to have problems with hair getting into their eyes and causing eye irritation and infections. The hair also restricts their vision making them even more of a clutz and this can sometimes lead to a change in their behaviour as they are more cautious of their surroundings.

Fury friends with thick coats can suffer during the Aussie summer and are more prone to heat stress. The thicker fur also means matts are more likely to form if not regularly groomed. These matts are painful, heavy and in extreme cases can cut off blood circulation to areas as well as being the perfect place for fleas to nest.

Brushing helps to not just detangle the fur and prevent matts but it also removes dead hair, dirt, and dandruff. Brushing your pet regularly can bring out the natural oils in their skin and give them a beautiful, healthy coat as well as help to reduce reactions to allergens if they are allergic to anything. It can also greatly reduce the number of hairballs they produce.

While they’re getting washed, their ears are cleaned and checked. Long haired or floppy ear dogs are most at risk to getting infections as their hair and ear positioning makes a perfect environment for bacteria and fungus to thrive. Regular ear clean also rids the ears of odour and makes your pooch smell as glamorous as they look and feel.

They also get their nails clipped as part of the service. Long nails are uncomfortable, hard to walk on and tend to split. Occasionally nails can grow so long that they grow back into the paw pads and this other than being very painful, also leads to infections where medication is required. For cats, clipping their nails means they can’t shred up your furniture or scratch you by accident while cuddling. If you have floor boards or tiles then clipping your dog’s nails can get rid of that tap tap sound you hear that drives most people crazy.

While they’re getting pampered the groomers also take note of anything abnormal such as sore abdomens, cuts, lumps, grass seeds and irritations you may not have noticed. As this is caught sooner it means your pet is looked after quicker. So remember, a well-groomed pet is a happy pet.
