State-of-the-art, In-house

Blood testing

Timely blood tests can give insight into the health and condition of your pet.

We have an in-house Blood Testing Laboratory

Our comprehensive lab allows us to diagnose metabolic problems early in pets, screen for diseases such as liver dysfunction and kidney failure and be used to monitor for side effects to commonly prescribed drugs.

Rapid Reporting

Most test results are available approximately 12 minutes after the collection! Our laboratory is also used to run blood tests before anaesthesia to ensure a safe anaesthetic experience.

Reference Laboratory

For special testing, we have a relationship with Laverty Pathology who collect samples from us two to three times daily.

What we measure when we test blood.

A blood test consists of looking at chemicals in the blood (biochemistry) and cells in the blood (CBC or blood smear examination).

Some of the Chemicals we look at include;

  • Glucose
  • ALT
  • AST
  • GGT
  • Bile acids
  • ALP
  • CPL
  • Amylase
  • Lipase
  • Creatinine Kinase
  • Creatinine
  • Urea (BUN)
  • Calcium
  • Phosphorous
  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Bicarbonate
  • Cholesterol
  • Thyroxine (thyroid hormone)

Our veterinarian will look at the combination of these chemicals to help get to a diagnosis of what organ systems are involved with the disease and how to treat it.

To understand what each of these chemicals indicates, you can read our article on  interpreting a blood test
